Biomarkers for Pregnancy complications: Evolution, Challenges, and Future Opportunities (141763)

Preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction (FGR) remain leading causes of maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in obstetric care, current screening approaches identify only a small proportion of women at risk, highlighting the need for improved predictive biomarkers. Our team aim to improve diagnostics biomarkers for these conditions.

This talk will describe our efforts to use large-scale discovery platforms, including aptamer-based proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics to identify novel biomarkers for preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Using well-characterised cohorts from Australia and international collaborators, we have identified and validated circulating biomarkers associated with both preeclampsia and FGR prior to clinical diagnosis. These biomarkers provide insights into the molecular pathways driving placental disease and offer potential opportunities for earlier risk stratification and intervention.
